Waterproof Wonders

This week in 1JR we kicked off our learning by looking at the story of Noah's Ark. Our focus this week in science is 'Waterproof Materials' so we thought it best to test our knowledge by building an ark for Noah and the animals. The children experimented with different materials using junk modelling to construct a variety of boats. We tested our models in the water tray and found out that some materials just aren't designed to get wet! We have been busy writing 'Missing' posters for all the animals that travelled on the ark, using the descriptive language and adjectives we have learnt this year. Some of the children entered the beanstalk challenge competition taking place in the classroom. Every participant had to write down a set of instructions for planting a bean before planting their own. We'll keep you posted on how well the runner beans are sprouting!

Learning Agreements in Year 1

This week we have introduced Learning Agreements into our school day. This is in prepartion for the children's transition into Year 2 where Learning Agreements are used from the start of the academic year through to the end. The Learning Agreements are designed to direct and guide your child's learning, encouraging all pupils to take part in a rich variety of learning experiences across the curriculum.

The day starts with Learning Agreement time.  Parents are invited into the classroom from 8.50am until 9.20am as usual. This time now gives you the opportunity to have a better knowledge and understanding of your child’s learning and aims to develop parental engagement.  The children have a new Learning Agreement each week with five activities (including English and Maths) designed so that they can independently apply the skills, knowledge or understanding that they have learnt the previous week.  The learning for each activity is clearly stated as is the variety of ways that the children can demonstrate successful learning.

If you have any questions about learning agreements I am always available to help!

I look forward to seeing you in the classroom...

Spring has sprung...

This term in Year 1 we have been learning about poetry and the free spirited nature of poetry writing. We learnt about concrete poems that take different shapes, rhyming poems with nonsense sentences in and poems with similies and metaphors. We were inspired by the change in season and decided to write poems about the signs of spring. Take a look at our adventurous writing and let us know what signs of spring you can see by leaving a comment below. Don't forget to include exciting adejectives!

Eggstraordinary Friends!

Today 1JR decided to pay our absent friend Finn a visit! We hopped on the number 3 bus and made a surprise stop off to say hello to Finn and his family. We bought along with us two gifts from the zoo, a cuddly toy parrot and an awesome book about birds, to cheer Finn up. After that we had another surprise visit to Sainsburys where we each chose an Easter egg. The children have worked incredibly hard this term on top of being such wonderful friends to each other, so deserved a chocolate treat! We'll just have to wait and see if the Easter Rabbit pays a visit too...

Let's Dance for Sport Relief!!

On Friday we celebrated Sport Relief, all playing our part in the fight for a better world. The children helped to fundraise wearing sport themed fancy dress and taking part in a sponsored dance event. Thank you to all the children and families who worked hard to raise money for this fantastic cause. The children are now dance masters in quite a few well known disco anthems so simply dig out your CD's and be prepared for a YMCA meets the Cha Cha Slide spectacle!

London Zoo

We enjoyed a magnificent day out at London Zoo, filled with sunshine and lots of animal antics. We were lucky enough to see the gorillas having a roll around their enclosure before watching the family cuddle up for an afternoon nap. We enjoyed seeing the penguins swimming in their new beach habitat and all had fun creeping quietly through the big cat den. Some of us had the pleasure of walking with butterflies and some even tried to sneak out of the zoo and back on to the coach! We demonstrated our prior learning in science as we ordered the stages of human, frog and butterfly life cycles. We explored the texture and feel of different animal skins as we discovered the different life cycles of a kangaroo, leopard, snake and zebra. Have a look at some of the snaps from our day out...how many different animals can you see?

Get Well Soon Finn!

This week in 1JR we were sad to hear that our good friend Finn is recovering from a bike accident. We would like to dedicate this song to him and wish him a speedy recovery! In 1JR we pride ourselves on being there for one another and no matter what, you can always count on us to brighten up any day! We miss you Finn... see you soon!
